The purpose of material on this site has come out of years of reflection and exploring the simple yet important questions: ‘What is truth – How do we know what we know?’  We all have a variety of experiences in our lives through our feelings, thoughts, ideas, opinions, conclusions, and beliefs.  These determine how we see the world and live our lives. There are many ways that we come to the way we see the world based on our own experience of humanity and the particular gifts that we have as a human being.

The Swiss psychologist, Carl Jung and others following him, particularly Myers Briggs have come up with descriptions of personality types that try to demonstrate how we come to our points of view about ourselves and our lives in the world, influenced by our own personality type.  For example some people are introverts, energised more from within than from the external world.  Others are extroverts and are energised by the external world.  Similarly, some people learn more through their feelings than their intellects and others vice versa. There are many other models including astrology and other disciplines that attempt similar insights as to how we know.

The Greek philosopher Plato said ‘that reason ploughs the field so the divine seed can be sown’.

We have a responsibility, whether we accept it or not that if we claim something to be true that is true and as a consequence represents what is the truth – as some philosophers say, `for all possible universes ‘or in spiritual terms, that what we claim to be true is God’s truth. In more secular terminology, what we claim to be true is true and as a consequence is for the good of the universe and ourselves. Clarifying our points of view requires of us to at first understand how we form those points of view and how we know whether they are true or not.

This site is dedicated to making a contribution to our understanding of the process of clarifying, what is truth and the multiplicity of factors that influence our understanding.

It is in this light that I would like to establish an ethos of goodwill in discussing all truth. This means that we try to approach truth in a non-adversarial or polemical way, and try to look for the good of any truth that is in a position stated. Not all statements will be totally true nor will they necessarily be totally false. This attitude needs to be taken whether we approach personal truth or historical truth. Historical truth being the record of the various claims made as to the truth in human history and in our time.
It needs to be noted from the outset, and as will become obvious from some of the content of on this site, that I believe in the existence of God, irrespective of any faith traditions that point to this truth or are based on it. Similarly it can be seen that, I have in referring to God in a previous paragraph, also tried to express the concept in secular terms.
I would hope that atheists could make contributions in the spirit of goodwill as well as people from any faith position
