In theory, the universities are meant to have a significant part in this process, but the diversity of tertiary institutions has significantly watered down the impact and universities are not necessarily representative of the diversity of ideologies within a community. Parliaments in some ways have become instruments of enforcing particular ideologies on a society where, in simplistic terms, 51% of the vote is sufficient to impose a particular ideology on the rest of the community. The Abbott government is a significant example of this process.
The failure of Parliament to be a place where ideologies or fundamental philosophies and theologies are discussed in a scientific way, is clearly demonstrated in the difficulty for there to be even proper policy debates within that forum.
For a scientific Society, our failure to have proper forums for reflection and debate on fundamental issues, as mentioned above, could one day be fatal to our civilisation. Until now, although these organisations provide a wonderful service to humanity they are weakened by the undermining effect of division within the member organisations and a lack of participation by some members of that organisation.
If we are to grow as a deeply rooted civilisation not just based on materialism but rather a society that seeks truth as the foundation of all that it does, then the sooner we find a mechanism, such as I have suggested, for the social clarification of ideologies, it is unlikely that we will ever deal with various forms of terrorism effectively.
